Banner ads are all around us on the internet. You’ll see them on this very page, on your favorite sports blog, news network sites and so on. Banner advertisement is a great way for websites to get some revenue, but of course on the other end of the table it’s a fantastic way for advertising companies to get some more attention. There are many banner sizes that can be placed on different positions of a website’s page. Today we’ll cover which are the standard banner sizes that are used in all major advertising networks like Google AdWords.
Standard banner sizes, in order of popularity:
468×60Full Banner

The 468×60 horizontal banner, or “Full Banner” is mostly used at the top or bottom of a page so it’s not too intrusive, but still out there. This is one of the most, if not the most, used banner sizes and are usually richly available on Google AdWords.
728×90Leaderboard

A 728×90 Leaderboard banner is often used in the header of a page, because it can take up quite a lot of space. The supply of Leaderboard ads is quite high in AdWords, because it’s a very obvious banner size and usually takes a prominent position on website pages.
336×280Large Rectangle

A large rectangle banner of 336×280 is in high demand with advertisers because website owners often either place this ad size within the page’s content or on a prominent position in a sidebar.
300×250Medium Rectangle

Just like the Large Rectangle (336×280), the Medium Rectangle of 300×250 is usually placed as a floating unit on the left or right side within the content. This makes the 300×250 banner a very popular ad size with advertisers.
160×600Wide Skyscraper

The 160×600 Wide Skyscraper banner can usually be found leaning against at either side of a boxed website page or in the sidebar. Its large appearance makes it quite a popular ad size for advertisers.
120×600Skyscraper

Same story as the Wide Skyscraper (160×600), but just a bit narrower, the regular Skyscraper of 120×600 is usually seen in sidebars or on either side of boxed website pages.
250×250Square

A bit less popular than the Large and Medium Rectangle banners, the 250×250 Square banner ad is mostly seen at the top of a sidebar or between sidebar elements. Because it’s a bit smaller than the rectangles it is also a bit less intrusive when you place it floating on the left or right side in your content.
125×125Square Button

125×125 Square Buttons are often seen in groups of 2 or 4 (2×2 for example) in the sidebar of a website page. This is a very popular ad size on advertising networks like BuySellAds.com.
234×60Half Banner

Not a very common banner ad size, but it’s still in demand by advertisers so it’s okay to place it in your sidebar for example.
300×1050Portrait

Last, but not least, this new banner size that is now being served by Google AdWords is great for larger websites that have space on either side of their boxed content. Ad sizes like these are usually interesting for bigger advertisers. Because it’s a “new” ad size, it’s not yet in full supply.
