Did you know that most people struggle to express what makes them unique? If you can say, in 20 words or less, what makes you uniquely valuable to your employer, you are way ahead of your competitors. Here are 10 tips for writing a high impact resume:
1 State your objective
Start with your career objective and clearly define your desired career path. Use the objective as an opportunity to say why you are best fit for the job.
2 Polish your resume as if your career depended on it
In most cases, your resume only gets 10 seconds to impress employers and make them want to meet you. What they’re actually looking for is even the slightest flag that may mark a potential problem and throw away your resume. So, don’t take chances. Make your resume shine.
3 Sell your features and benefits
Demonstrate your employer how your skills and working experience will meet their needs. Show them that you have what it takes to solve their problems. Learn to think like an employer, discover their needs and match them with your most appropriate benefit.
4 Target your resume to the job requirements
Sending out the same resume for every job is a waste of time. Instead, carefully highlight skills that match the job requirements as listed in the ad. Create a section at the top of your resume and list all the skills that are important to each specific job.
5 Show initiative and quantify your results
Include all the necessary details about your accomplishments and quantify your results whenever possible. Make employers see that you are not an average worker, but are willing to go the extra mile to solve their problems.
6 Be concise
Keep your resume concise and to the point. Avoid the common laundry lists of responsibilities for each of your past jobs. Keep your resume within 2-3 pages and briefly state the contributions you made in each of them.
7 Stay away from unnecessary personal information
Do not list too many any personal data, such as age, social status, religion, personal interests etc. (unless they relate to certain skills).
8 Give a sense of who you are
This is your best chance to market yourself to an employer and stir curiosity in wanting to meet you. Reveal yourself in a way that makes them know you will look for ways to do your best and make their company grow.
9 Smart formatting
Use consistent layout, fonts and sizes. Make sure that your application is well structured and provide some visual interest to the pages using creative formatting. Search the internet for good examples and templates.
10 Identify your career path
Analyze your current lifestyle and visualize how your career will progress in 5-10 years from now, then layout the plan for achieving your goal.
