What Technology Is Best for Grandma? 5 Choices and How to Choose
Grandparents are notorious for being slow to adopt new technology, mainly because it’s hard to try new things. Of course, this isn’t true of all grandparents, but you can help yours make the transition to technology by finding the right technology to meet their needs, and then teaching them how to use it. Take a look at these 5 devices and why you would choose each one for your grandparent.
1 Desktop Computers: For Basic Email and Internet Access
The desktop computer is a good choice for grandparents that just need basic access to the Internet to check their email because it has everything they need without the high cost. Plus, grandparents can easily store papers and files next to their computer, which keeps everything organized and in one place. You should buy your grandparents a desktop computer if you think they will only be casual users.
Here are some other reasons to choose a desktop computer for your grandparents:
- It’s the most affordable option because it’s been around the longest
- It has the biggest screen for grandparents with poor eyesight
- It has the largest memory for grandparents that want to store pictures and videos
2 Laptops: For Less Mobile Grandparents
The laptop is a step up from a desktop computer because of its mobility. If you could see your grandparents sitting on the couch to use their laptop, then this would be the best computer for them. It is also a good option for grandparents that have no space to store a desktop computer.
Here are some other reasons to choose a laptop for your grandparents:
- It’s good for grandparents that can’t get around very well
- It’s portable, so grandparents can bring it to your house if it has a problem
- It doesn’t have to be plugged in to work
3 Tablets: For Grandparents that Like to Play Games
The tablet is the hippest choice for your grandparents because it is the newest. It might even be the best option because of the touchscreen interface. If your grandparents like to read or you could see them playing games on a tablet, you should choose a tablet for them.
Here are some reasons to choose a tablet for your grandparents:
- It can be taken anywhere in a purse or backpack
- It’s more user friendly than a desktop or laptop
- It has apps that are appealing to grandparents
4 Kindle: For Grandparents Who are Avid Readers
Many Grandparents may have to have lots of light to read because of dwindling eyesight. The kindle lights up and makes this issue disappear regardless of the lighting in the room. This is a space saver as some grandparents tend to read books at an unheard of pace.
Reason for the Kindle:
- It is a space saver
- It can be read anywhere in any light
- Very affordable if a computer doesn’t interest them
5 Smartphones: Advanced Grandparent
Smartphones are evolving at such a rate that it can be difficult to keep up with which application is the newest and best. For the more advanced grandparents who has already mastered the above pieces of technology, the smartphone is the best option for them. They can keep in touch while being able to do most functions that a computer would offer and it is small enough to be put in a pocket.
Reasons for a Smartphone:
- Fits into a pocket
- Makes getting into contact easy whether by phone or email
- Combines games, apps, email, and phone usage
As you can see, there is no one answer to the best technology for your grandparents. You need to look at their needs and choose one that will work well for them. Of course, the best way to get your grandparents to use a computer is to take the time to show them how to use it. If you make it easy, your grandparents will see how useful it is. You can’t just give a computer to your grandparents and assume they will know what to do with it, because if they are over the age of 65, chances are good that they won’t have a clue. Watch out though, being retired and having a computer could have your grandparents teaching you soon enough!
