When planning your summer vacation, why not consider Newfoundland and Labrador? Canada’s most easterly point, the province is known for its beautiful landscape and fun-loving people. Home of the oldest North American city but also Canada’s youngest province, there is plenty to discover about this unique province—so why wait?
Here are the top five things you have to do while in Newfoundland & Labrador.
1. Attend a Festival
Newfoundlanders are known to be jovial people who are not only proud of their heritage, but who also love to have a good time. There are many festivals and events in the summer to gain an insight into their fascinating history and culture, including the Iceberg Festival and the Grand Bank Regional Theatre Festival.
2. Hiking & Walking
Set up against a background like no other, with 29,000 kilometres of pristine coastline, you may find quite literally that you’ll spend your entire vacation on your feet. Hike the Skerwink Trail to catch glimpses of whales and icebergs, or the Baccalieu Trail to find charming fishing villages and gorgeous coastal scenery.
3. Fishing
With more fish species found here than anywhere else in Canada, there are not many fishing destinations that would rival Newfoundland and Labrador. Use an outfitter who will guide you to all the best secret spots to cast your line.

4. Diving
Just off the coast of this province, there is a diver’s haven filled with marine life, breathtaking ice bergs, and spectacular shipwrecks. Nothing beats getting face-to-face with history, like the SS Lord Strathcona, a sunken German U-boat from WWII, located in Conception Bay near Bell Island.
5. Food & Dining
A seafood lovers’ paradise, you cannot leave this island without trying their Atlantic salmon straight from the Exploits River in Central Newfoundland, or the fish and chips from the famous Ches’ s Fish & Chips, started in the 1950s. Don’t forget their local specialties like: cod tongues, doughboys, salt fish and brewis, and toutons.
