I seem to remember that when I was young, one of the things I wanted to ‘be’ when I grew up was a spy, along with a dinosaur, a karate champion and a racing driver. I didn’t matter that I knew very little about what spies actually did, I just wanted to dress up in a trench coat and a bowler hat and walk around inspecting things with a microscope.
Of course as I grew up my perceptions of spies changed, mainly as a result of my exposure to James Bond movies. Moving into my early teens I naively assumed being a spy was all about travelling the world playing with spy gadgets, meeting beautiful women, driving fast cars and defeating bad guys. This is of course also totally inaccurate, and now, in my mid-twenties and understanding a little more about the role of a soy, I’m still not entirely sure what it is they do!
With this in mind I thought it would be fun to rewind to my youth when things were much more innocent and fun. Here are my top five cartoon spies;

1 Inspector Gadget
This geeky spy always had a trick up his sleeve – literally! The great thing about Inspector Gadget was that he never needed to carry gadgets around with him, since they were all part of his body. Whether it was the helicopter blades that sprouted from his hat or the extending arms, he always had the means to get out of scrapes!
2 Droopy
What Droopy lacked in enthusiasm he made of for in quick-wittedness and detective nous. The crime solving dog was always on the ball, even if he didn’t seem like it most of the time!
3 James Bond Junior
The younger Mr Bond, apparently the nephew of his famous namesake came into the spying world with all the expectations of the Bond legacy on his shoulders, and he didn’t disappoint. Although the series lacked the bloody fights typical of the films, the range of gadgets on offer surpassed the real-life Bond!
4 Hong Kong Phooey
Yes, I’m featuring another anthropomorphic dog in the line up, but any self self-respecting spy fan would be foolish to omit such a savvy crimefighter. Hong King Fooey was not only a crime fighting dog, he also a kung fu master and had an awesome theme tune to boot!
5 Sharky and George
Anyone who remembers this will know that these two finned detectives-fighters were the ‘crime-busters of the sea’. They weren’t exactly well, disguised with their pink and yellow skin but they were certainly adept at solving all the fishy goings on!
