Celebs are not exactly known for their pared back taste and low key landscaping – you wouldn’t expect to see someone like Brad Pitt living in a small semi with a modest back garden and room for just one car, for example. However, some celebrities really like to push the boat out when it comes to insane abodes.
1John Travolta – the airport obsessive.

Located near Ocala, Florida, Travolta’s home is half airport, half mansion, complete with a feature runway as well as all the usual celeb accoutrements such as a swimming pool. Instead of a few quad bikes or a horse or two, for his plaything Travolta has restored a Boeing 707 to make it look like a vintage Quantas jet.
2George Clooney – Renaissance man.
On the shores of Lake Como – just like his Ocean’s 11 alter ego – George Clooney has bought himself one of those huge lakeside villas that are so typical of this part of Italy. This one comes complete with a huge swimming pool, outdoor theatre and an extensive garage for all his motors.
3Donald Trump – bomb shelters.
Palm Beach Florida is home to one of Trump’s many properties and as you might expect from someone like Don it’s not exactly a subtle affair tucked away at the end of a cul de sac. 58 rooms, a mere 33 bathrooms and three bomb shelters (!) make this one of the biggest and most extravagant celeb houses you will find.
4Bill Gates – a property wide server system.
As you might expect from one of the richest men in the world, Bill Gates’ Medina, Washington home is pretty spectacular. With a bowling alley, pool and an estate wide server system, it’s a pretty high tec affair and that’s before you take into account the pin that all guests wear that controls music, lights and temperature. Fancy.
5Hugh Hefner – his own zoo.

The Playboy Mansion is without doubt one of the most insane celebrity houses (and that’s before you even take into account all the bunnies). An ‘Elvis Suite,’ pet cemetery, aviary, zoo, wine cellar, grotto and waterfall are just a few of the unusual amenities Hef has to offer his guests.
6Will Smith – his own zip code.
If you thought that Will Smith was now anything like his ‘West Philadelphia born and raised’ Fresh Prince character then think again because Smith’s house is so sizeable that it has its own zip code. Essentially a castle with its own lake, tennis courts and a golf course, Smith clearly has some pretty unrestrained pretentions of grandeur going on.
7Matt Groening – giant donut.
The Simpson’s creator has a pretty good looking home in Santa Monica but it’s fairly regular, nothing really so insane about it. That is until you look in the back yard and see the huge donut shaped swimming pool in honour of Groening’s main man Homer Simpson.
8Oprah Winfrey – her own lake.
She might insist that she’s a woman of the people but Oprah’s palatial house tells a different story. The 23,000-square-foot mansion has no less than ten fireplaces, a home cinema and a specially constructed lake for Oprah’s collection of exotic fish.
9Paris Hilton – extravagant, moi?
Of course heiress Paris Hilton would be the owner of one of the most extravagant celebrity houses around. Set up in the Hollywood Hills the house has a pretty substantial 400-sq ft closet, a mini version of itself in the grounds for all her pooches, and some rather lovely light fittings, such as a $43,000 Baccarat crystal chandelier.
10Robbie Williams – come fly with me.

When he returned from the US to the UK, Robbie made sure he had a decent pad to bed down in – a rather sizeable property in Compton Basset in Wiltshire. As well as a sauna and a pool, the house has its own helipad – well if you were Robbie Williams you would wouldn’t you.
These are 10 of the world’s most insane celebrity houses. Whether you think they’re crazy or inspirational, there’s no denying that a lot of effort has gone in to making sure that they stand out…
