The world of video games is growing at a rapid pace. It is so fast that you can rarely tell which category the game you played last is in. Heck, there are so many new games these days that it can be a challenge to classify it as just one genre. Traditionally though, games fell into one main category. Here are 10 game genres that will never die, regardless of how advanced newer games may get…

1 Action games

These are the most popular type. They call upon fast reflexes and expert timing capability of the player. Action games can usually be played by any member of the family. A good thing about them is that they train your mind to remain calm in challenging situations, something you might need in real life situations.

2 Shooter games

These involve combat situations where the characters use projectile weapons to defeat enemies. They can be played in pairs, as a single player or an entire team of players. Many of these games are based on martial arts and military combat and may not be the best choice for youngsters.

3 Racing games

They are also quite popular, especially among teenagers. Racing games put the player in a driver’s seat where they have to win the race. They help improve concentration since they involve driving at high speeds and overcoming obstacles to win the race.

4 Strategy games

These call upon the player’s ability to make a plan and execute it. There is real time strategy and turn based strategy games. Real time strategy games involve the player making decisions which the game character should take. Making the wrong decision can result in a “game over” scenario. Turn based strategy games involve playing against an opponent where you take turns to make a move.

5 Role playing games

In this genre, the player is assigned a certain role which they must accomplish to advance to higher levels. There are old-school varieties that are pretty basic and mostly text-based, as well as more intricately developed online MMORPG’s like World of Warcraft.

6 Sports games

This is another genre that is quite popular. The player gets to control a sporting team in a competition against an opposing team controlled by the gaming software. You get to play God and control your favorite team to victory (or loss).

7 Action adventure games

This game combines both the action genre and the adventure genre. The player controls a character who is involved in a mission. Completing the mission opens up a higher level of the game.

8 Adventure games

This calls upon the player to interact with other characters in the game to solve puzzles.

9 Construction and management simulation games

Here, the player is tasked with building and expanding fictional projects with scarce resources. These games will enable you build necessary skills to survive in real life. For example, you can play a game which involves money management. The skills and tactics employed in the game can also be employed in real life situations, enabling you manage your funds wisely. The “Tycoon” series are good examples.

10 Simulation games

This genre attempts to replicate various real life events in fiction. Its main purpose is to call upon the player’s ability to gain a certain skill. Two of the most successful games of this type are The Sims and flight simulators.

Games are one of the best ways to learn and gain some skills. They are also a great way to sharpen your reflexes and challenge your mind to think.
