In lack of inspiration lately, it was time for some thorough investigation in one of my greater hobbies: FOOD! And what type of food is better known than the good-ole Pizza?

I wouldn’t class pizza as my favourite food, but it’s up there in the ranks and I figured it would be fun to look into on the internet. And it is.

Here’s some basic facts and statistics about pizza, all information properly stolen from various sources (mostly Wikipedia), but sorted out in the usual bite-size chunks for your convenience:

The History Of Pizza.. in a glance!

No true origin known, but references to the word pizza are seen as early as the 10th century.
Pizza started out as a food for the poor, what with the cheap dough and all..
The first “official” pizza was the Pizza Margherita (Margherita being the reigning king’s wife at the time), created out of specific ingredients to include the three colours of the national flag: RED, WHITE and BLUE

Nah, Dutch people don’t have rich history in food. The colours were ofcourse RED, WHITE and GREEN of the grande Italian flag

Right. So in like the 20th century it all went fast. Pizza became wildly popular all around the globe.
These days, the U.S. alone is good for a $32+ billion a year pizza industry which comes down to the consumption of 3 billion pizzas each and every year. Which is sickening.

After this amazingly brief history lesson, let’s go on with what I feel will surely enrich your life.

Top 5 Most Popular Pizza Toppings

1. Pizza Pepperoni

Probably the best known pizza topping ever, the Pepperoni pizza generally consists of beef and pork sausage enriched with spicy cayenne pepper from the “peperone” plant.

Usual ingredients:

tomato-sauce
mozzarella cheese
pepperoni sausage slices (oh rly?)
onion

2. Pizza Extra Cheese (Double Cheese)

Very basic, but very popular! This pizza usually consists of nothing but cheese, or maybe just several kinds of cheese. Generally no added toppings are used, so you won’t find any kinds of meat or vegetables.

The Extra Cheese can also be referred to as a Quattro Formaggi pizza, but obviously four types of cheese would have to be involved

Usual ingredients:

Mozzarella cheese
Grated Swiss cheese
Parmesan cheese
Gorgonzola cheese
or any other kind of cheese really
oh yeah and some tomato sauce to at least make it look Italian

3. Pizza Funghi (mushrooms)

If a vegetable makes it to be a pizza topping for nutrient-sake, the most popular veggie is the mushroom. Mushroom being a fungus and sounding cooler in Italian, this pizza topping may also be referred to as a Pizza Funghi.

Usual ingredients:

Agaricus bisporus: a fancy name for our ‘regular’ mushroom
Mozzarella cheese
Any other cheese
some tomato sauce
Shrooms… for the experimental type

4. Pizza Hawaii (Pineapple)

Yes, there’s also the sweet variant of pizza. Use some pineapple as a topping for some tropical pleasure!

Usual ingredients:

Pineapple
Cheese
Onion for contrast
A non-spicy meat such as ham
tomato sauce again

5. Pizza Tonno (Tuna)

Even fish makes it as pizza topping! Goes to show that you can chuck just about anything on that thin piece of dough, as long as there is some tomato sauce and cheese involved.
